Augustus Koopman painted landscapes and heart-warming compositions. He was also a talented engraver and designer.

Koopman began his studies in Philadelphia (US), but chose to continue his artistic training in Europe and settled in Paris, where he met the famous William Bouguereau (1825-1905) and Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911). The American Art Association in Paris awarded his work twice: the second "Prix Wanamcker" (1898) and the first "Prix Clark" (1899). He exhibited in the Salon du Société des Artistes Français in Paris in 1899, 1905, 1908 and 1910.

Koopman also won a bronze and silver medal for his decorations at the Exposition Universelle in Paris (1900) and another bronze medal in Buffalo (1901).
