The Dresden-born painter was known for painting historical scenes, portraits, interiors and landscapes. He was a pupil of, among others, Ferdinand Pauwels (1830-1904), known for his genre pieces and historical scenes and director of the Dresden Art Academy.
Ernst continued his education in 1899 in Munich at the Academy of Fine Arts and in 1892 in Paris at the 'Académie Julian' with Jules Dupré (1811-1889), landscape painter of the Barbizon school. From 1893, he lived in Dresden, where he founded his own academy for drawing, painting and modelling. He passed away in his native city in 1929.
